Allen grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He is happily married and has 6 kids. Allen graduated from Purdue University with honors before studying law at Vanderbilt University Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1989.
He is a former Academic All-American at Purdue University. He’s also involved with Tennessee’s Democratic Party. Allen volunteers at the “Room at the Inn,” which is a non-profit organization that helps homeless people transition back into society.
Allen is very passionate about his clients. When asked what is the most frequent legal question he is asked, he responded. “Am I wrong for hiring an attorney?” Allen’s Response: “Not at all. Our job is to seek justice, not exact revenge.”
In 2019, Attorney Allen Smith was driving to work when traffic slowed and he saw a van flipped over and smoke coming from the van. He pulled over and ran to help out. He and another man helped to pull a woman from the burning vehicle before the emergency responders were there. In essence, he helped save her life.
When asked if there was a time recently when he thought that is why he became an attorney, he responded with the story below.
“We had represented a young man who burned to death in a vehicle years earlier. Representing his interests and celebrating his life was an honor and his memory inspired me to pull that woman from her car. I called his mother and told her that her son continued to impact the world in a positive manner. She broke into tears of gratitude. It is the human side of the practice that I find most rewarding.”
