As School Starts, Nashville Pedestrian Accident Prevention Takes Priority

Schools are back in session across Middle Tennessee, and many area children are walking along public roads. The Nashville pedestrian accident lawyers at Ponce Law say this leads to an increase in collisions between children and motor vehicles and has prompted local medical professionals to call for increased awareness of pedestrian safety risks.

The medical staff at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has reported treating at least 31 children struck by a car or a truck last summer. According to the Brentwood Home Page, they say that a child running into the street without paying attention is often the cause, but add you can take these steps to help reduce the chances of accidents.

  • Prohibit young children from crossing streets alone– Only children age 10 or older should be allowed to cross streets—but even older children should follow several rules when considering crossing streets.
  • Look both ways– Before ever crossing a road, be sure to look in both directions to ensure there is no oncoming traffic.
  • Be Visible– If walking near dusk or dawn, be sure to carry a flashlight or wear light colored clothing so that motorists can more easily see you.

At Ponce Law, we know the importance of protecting pedestrian safety here in Music City, and our Nashville personal injury attorneys are hopeful this information helps prevent accidents.
