ELMWOOD, TN – A retired Tennessee police officer who was serving as a Smith County Commissioner died in a utility vehicle accident last week, the Smith County Insider reports.

The victim was identified as David Gross, a retired Patrol Sergeant who worked for 20 years with the Berry Hill Police Department.  Authorities said he had been driving a Dodge Caravan that hit a pole on Sullivan’s Bend Lane in Elmwood last Wednesday. Gross was picked up and driven home by a passerby following the accident.

Gross then began heading back to the scene of the original accident in a side-by-side utility vehicle, but he crashed along the way and was killed.

Gross had been serving for the past 14 years as a County Commissioner for District 8.
