Crash alert: Man killed, police officer injured in Joelton 3-vehicle wreck

NASHVILLE, TN – A man was killed and a Nashville police officer seriously injured in a crash involving three vehicles in Joelton Wednesday, according to WKRN.

Investigators determined that the driver of a pickup truck, 56-year-old Roger McElroy, went through a stop sign at the intersection of Bernard Road and Clarksville Pike at about 3:30 p.m.

The pickup struck another vehicle, which went into the northbound lanes of Clarksville Pike and crashed into the patrol car of Officer Ben Cantrell.

The driver of the second vehicle, 66-year-old Steven Toth, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Officer Cantrell sustained serious injuries that were not life-threatening, and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

McElroy was arrested and is facing charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Officer Cantrell, a 19-year Metro Nashville Police veteran, was headed home after completing his shift when the accident occurred.
