NASHVILLE, TN – Statistics indicate a grim milestone for Nashville and the rest of Tennessee, with a record number of pedestrian deaths reported in 2020.
According to a report by WSMV, 102 pedestrians have been killed statewide as of last week and 25 have died while walking in Nashville. The most recent case involved a 60-year-old man who was struck while trying to cross Dickerson Pike. Those numbers represent the most pedestrian deaths in Nashville for this time of the year, and the most in Tennessee overall, even with three months left in the year.
The executive director of Walk Bike Nashville told WSMV the increase in fatalities can be attributed to poor lighting on streets, a lack of crosswalks and speeding motorists.
She called for improved lighting at crosswalks, and said the city’s public works department should implement a formal pedestrian safety program.
