Man wanted for crimes in TN arrested after high-speed chase in VA

ABINGDON, VA – A man wanted in Tennessee for a number of motor vehicle and drug-related charges was arrested in Abingdon, VA on Sunday night, after leading police on a high-speed chase, according to the Bristol Herald Courier.

Officials say 32-year-old Adams, TN resident Matthew Lucas Jones was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase that damaged multiple vehicles in Abingdon. 

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was wanted for evading arrest, possession of Schedule I narcotics with intent to sell, vehicle theft, and motor vehicle risk of injury, in Tennessee. After his arrest in Virginia, he was additionally charged with felony elude, reckless driving, attempted capital murder of two law enforcement officers, possession of Schedule I narcotics, and being a fugitive of justice. 

Sheriff Blake Andis said the chase began when the suspect was pulled over for driving over 90 mph on I-81 south near mile marker 23. The suspect— who was driving a white Toyota Highlander that was reported stolen from Nashville, Tennessee on Nov. 23—sped away as the officer approached the car. 

In the resulting chase, which reached a high speed of 93 mph, the Toyota drove through spike traps and collided with two semi trucks, two state police vehicles, and a civilian Jeep at various points. After abandoning the vehicle on Page Street in Abingdon, the suspect hid underneath a nearby porch for some time and then fled again on foot, extending the police pursuit for more than two hours.
