Prepare Your Vehicle for Cold Weather With this Checklist

Winter is still several weeks away, but cold weather can set in quickly in Middle Tennessee. Freezing temperatures are common in November and early December, and it’s never too early to be prepared for the possibility of ice on your commute—especially if you cross bridges or high elevations.

Get a jumpstart on the winter driving seasons by preparing your vehicle while the weather is still mild. This checklist can help you tackle problems before they put you and your family at risk:

  • Check your tires. You can easily check the “health” and condition of your tires by simply inspecting them for wear and signs of damage. If they pass the eye test, check their PSI. If it has been a year or longer since you added air to them, they may be underinflated.
  • Pay attention to your brakes. Does your vehicle seem sluggish when you apply the brakes? Does it take a lot of force on your brake pedal to slow down or stop? If so, it could indicate that your brakes are worn and need to be replaced. Do this before winter weather to avoid serious risks.
  • Inspect your battery. Vehicle batteries don’t hold up well in cold weather, especially when they’re depleted or have rusted and corroded connections and terminals. You can use a toothbrush and baking soda to clean a corroded battery, but if your battery is too far gone and won’t hold a charge, you’ll need to replace it.

Once winter weather arrives, it’s important to continue to be safety-conscious on TN’s roads and to be prepared for an accident. And if you’re injured by a negligent driver, know that the Nashville auto accident lawyers at Ponce Law are here to help.
