Drinking and Driving Doesn’t Always Mean Alcohol!

Everyone knows the dangers of drinking while driving. Alcohol consumption and operating a 3,500-pound vehicle simply don’t mix. But did you know that drinking ANYTHING while you’re behind the wheel can increase your chances of a crash?

Whether it’s water, soda, coffee, or tea, the act of drinking itself can put you at risk of a crash. That’s because anything you do while driving that isn’t:

  • scanning the road ahead for other vehicles, turns, and potential hazards,
  • keeping your hands firmly on the wheel,
  • and maintaining full mental focus on driving safely,

can put you, your passengers, and other motorists at risk. And yes, that includes drinking any liquid! Hot drinks are especially distracting, as they must be picked up, handled, and sipped more carefully to avoid spills and burns. If you have a habit of drinking coffee on your morning commute, you should reconsider it, as it could be increasing your risk of a crash.

It’s also important to avoid eating behind the wheel. Even if you’re capable of doing so with your eyes on the road and one hand still on the wheel, you’re reducing your ability to drive safely and react appropriately to the movements of vehicles around you. The more things occupying your mind and energy, the less attention you can devote to the task at hand—getting to your destination safely.

If you or someone you love is hurt in a crash that wasn’t your fault, there’s a good chance the other driver was distracted. At Ponce Law, our Nashville auto accident attorneys hold those drivers accountable for their negligence. Contact us today for a free consultation—we’ll work hard to get you paid.
