Work injuryAccording to a new nationwide workers’ compensation report compiled by Allsup, rates of serious work-related injury and illness vary considerably between states, even for workers in the same industries. The report, based on data obtained from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, highlights the most hazardous industries by location, based on the rates of work injuries that are serious enough to result in job restrictions or time off work. If you have suffered a serious on-the-job injury in Tennessee, contact our workers’ compensation attorneys at Michael D. Ponce & Associates today. You may be entitled to reimbursement for your medical bills and lost wages, which our lawyers can help you pursue.

Most Dangerous States, Industries for Workers

The comparisons made in this workers’ comp report are important, because they draw attention to the prevalence of on-the-job injuries and fatalities in Tennessee and throughout the United States. According to the report, the states with the highest rate of workplace injuries per 100 full-time private industry workers include:

  1. Maine – 1.4
  2. Indiana – 1.1
  3. California – 1.0
  4. Connecticut, Nevada, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Wisconsin – 0.9
  5. Tennessee, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, Oregon, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington – 0.8

Based on data provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, these states all have work injury rates that are higher than the national average of 0.7 injury or illness cases requiring job restriction per 100 workers. The workers’ comp report goes even further, identifying the 11 industry groups with the highest rates of serious workplace injury per 100 workers nationwide in 2011, which include motor vehicle manufacturing, assisted living facilities for the elderly, nursing care facilities, animal slaughtering and processing, and beverage manufacturing.
