Common Mistakes to Avoid on the Interstate

Many Nashvillians and Middle Tennessee residents use at least one of the area’s many interstates every day to get to and from work. Driving on the interstate is a much different experience than driving on a rural road or urban street. The speed limit is higher, the traffic volume is often greater, and you have to know how to properly enter and exit the roadway.

To reduce your risks the next time you drive on the interstate, keep these tips in mind:

  • Stay out of the far-left lane unless passing: For decades, drivers have complained about other motorists hanging out in the far-left lane of highways and interstates, which slows traffic. Now, it’s against the law to do so, due to Tennessee’s Slowpoke Law. Unless you’re passing another vehicle, don’t drive in the far-left lane.
  • Switch lanes ahead of time: One of the most dangerous things you can do on the interstate is to try and traverse multiple lanes of traffic all at once to get to your exit. When you know you need to exit, get in the right lane as early as possible.
  • Avoid using cruise control in inclement weather: Cruise control can make driving on long, flat stretches of interstate easier and more convenient. But it can be dangerous when you’re driving on slick asphalt, as your vehicle may accelerate erratically and too quickly for the conditions. Accelerate and brake manually unless roads are dry.
