Be Aware of Motorcyclists During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Being a safe driver means safely sharing the road with everyone who uses it. While most of the vehicles you’ll encounter on Tennessee’s roads are cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs, there’s another vehicle you’ll encounter, especially during warmer months: motorcycles.

Although motorcycles are fast and loud, the people who ride them are extremely vulnerable during crashes with other vehicles. Riders can reduce their risks of certain injuries by wearing safety equipment, but accidents can still cause them to suffer painful, disabling, and even life-threatening injuries.

As a driver, you can do your part in reducing motorcyclists’ risks by always keeping an eye out for them. That means never driving while distracted, always checking your blind spots before changing lanes, and being extra cautious when turning left.

Left-turning vehicles are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists. Too often, drivers simply don’t see or look for motorcyclists before turning left. When they cross opposite lanes of traffic while turning, their vehicles may end up directly in the paths of motorcyclists, who may collide with them.

These types of collisions are notorious for being extremely serious and potentially deadly for motorcyclists, as they are thrown off their bikes and directly into the vehicles themselves. The next time you turn left, don’t just look for other cars, trucks, and SUVs—keep an eye out for motorcyclists and even bicyclists, too.
