Driving Safely in Winter Weather

Nashville has experienced below-freezing temperatures in recent days, leading to hard freezes both overnight and throughout the day. Winter weather can significantly increase the risk of accidents throughout the mid-state area and on busy highways and interstates, especially with the potential of ice on roads.

Ice is the biggest risk that drivers face during the winter, but snow, potholes, and freezing rain are also threats that all drivers should take seriously when temperatures dip below freezing. At Ponce Law, our Nashville auto accident attorneys know how risky winter driving can be, but we also know that you can reduce your chances of being involved in a crash by following these tips:

  • Reduce your speed. The simplest and most effective way to avoid a winter weather accident is to slow down. Reducing your speed makes it easier to stay in control of your vehicle, but it also improves your braking ability and stopping distance.
  • Don’t follow too closely. Black ice can be almost invisible from the driver’s seat of a vehicle, and by the time your reach it, it’s too late. When you apply your brakes on black ice, you’ll skid rather than stop. Staying multiple car lengths back can help you avoid a rear-end collision when roads are slick.

One of the best ways to stay safe when roads are treacherous is to stay home. When that’s not possible, be cautious, proceed slowly, and avoid abrupt braking or accelerating to improve your traction.

Unfortunately, not all drivers are as cautious during winter weather, and accidents will happen as a result. If you or someone you love was hurt in a snow or ice-related crash, we want to hear from you. Call today for a free consultation.
