Nashville Personal Injury Lawyers Discuss 5 Changes to Immigration Laws

January 24, 2014

The new year is here and with the change comes new laws. The Nashville Immigration Lawyers with Ponce Law explain that many in the legal community are interested in what progress will take place with immigration  reform. Last year the Senate passed a bill creating changes, but the House of Representatives shot it down.

According to an article from the Center for American Progress, five laws have been passed in previous years with similar political climates. They include:

  1. The Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986 – States immigrants who entered the country prior to Jan. 1, 1982, could receive citizenship along with creating penalties for hiring unauthorized workers.
  2. The Immigration Act of 1990 – Allowed for more permanent visas to be distributed and reformed the visas lottery system.
  3. The Illegal Immigration Reform Act of 1996 – Created a 3- to 10-year ban on returning to the United States for any immigrant caught illegally entering the country. Furthermore, it called for anyone seeking asylum to file an application to receive that status within one year of arrival .
  4. The LIFE Act of 2000– Allowed relatives of U.S. citizens and green card holders to change their status to permanent resident without having to leave the country.
  5. DREAM Act of 2010 – Creates a path of citizenship for young, undocumented residents.

Michael D. Ponce & Associates’ Nashville Personal Injury Lawyers recognize how complex immigration law can be and are here to help anyone with their questions regarding citizenship.
