Routine Vehicle Maintenance Tips that Can Keep You Safe on the Road

The most important part of safe driving is driving defensively and following all traffic laws. That means not speeding, not driving while impaired, avoiding distractions, coming to a complete stop at stop signs, and giving other vehicles plenty of room.

But for some drivers, there’s another variable that can increase their chances of being involved in a crash: neglected vehicle maintenance. Thankfully, keeping your vehicle road-worthy and safe to drive only requires a few quick steps every few weeks:

  • Check your tires—Inspect your tires for signs of damage or wear. If they’ve been punctured by a nail or glass, or if their tread is significantly worn, replace them as soon as possible. You should also check their pressure and ensure it matches the recommended levels.
  • Check your lights—Ensure your headlights, high beams, emergency flashers, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals work. Your lights help you see other vehicles, help other drivers see you, and signal your intentions to other drivers—all of which are important for avoiding a crash.
  • Check your windshield wipers—Many people take their windshield wipers for granted. If your wipers suddenly fail in the middle of a rainstorm, you’ll have little to no visibility. If your wipers are broken or damaged, replace them ASAP.

When other drivers fail to keep their vehicles maintained or are negligent in any other way that leads to a crash, they can be held liable for any damages they cause.
