Study Examines Factors That Contribute to the Severity of Truck Accidents

December 18, 2013

Tractor-trailers present a significant hazard on Tennessee highways. The Nashville Truck Accident Lawyers with Ponce Law explain a new study examined the number of accidents the state has seen in recent years and also measured the severity of those crashes.

According to a story released by Science Daily, the study was conducted by examining the factors involved in 1,134 Tennessee truck accidents. The characteristics of each accident were then divided into five different categories, including traffic, the driver, the vehicle, environmental, and geometric.

The researchers concluded that the greatest contributing factor to truck accidents was the volume of these vehicles on the road. Even a one percent increase in truck volume on the highway led to a drastic increase in the chances of accidents occurring.

Increased speed and vehicle size also directly related to the severity of accidents, as did weather.

The study highlights the serious risks commercial tractor-trailers can pose on the road and leave many citizens wondering what they should do if they are ever involved in a collision with a truck. The Nashville Personal Injury Lawyers with Michael D. Ponce & Associates explain anyone who has been in a collision with a tractor-trailer combination should discuss their legal rights and options with a qualified attorney immediately.
