Summer Is Just Around the Corner

Although it’s still cold in Nashville, spring is just around the corner followed shortly by summer. And as the days get longer and the temperatures rise, it’ll soon be time to uncover your pool and get it ready for the season. There’s nothing better than a cool swim on a hot summer’s day, but before you open your pool for the year, consider a sobering statistic.

According to the CDC, there are an average of 10 drowning deaths every day, and two of those 10 are children. Many of these deaths could have been avoided if the owner of the pool had taken the proper precautions.

Here are five tips for making your pool safer for your family and the community you live in:

  1. Teach everyone in your family basic water safety, including how to swim or at least stay buoyant in deeper water.
  2. Make sure all drains and pipes have proper covers to reduce the risk of underwater entanglements.
  3. Fence in your pool so that younger children in the neighborhood don’t wander into your yard and accidentally fall in.
  4. Have every adult in your family learn CPR and obtain a certification.
  5. Clearly communicate the safety rules to family and neighbors before anyone dips a toe in the water.

Unfortunately, we’ve had several swimming pool deaths in Nashville over the past several years. These deaths are made even more tragic, as many could have been avoided.
