October is the first-ever National Pedestrian Safety Month. Awareness and enforcement campaigns are being highlighted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration to help pedestrians reduce their risks and provide drivers with tips for not endangering pedestrians.

According to the NHTSA, there are five tips all pedestrians should keep in mind while walking:

  1. Walk on sidewalks if they’re available.
  2. Avoid distractions while walking.
  3. Cross the street at crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing, even if you have a “walk” signal.
  4. Make yourself as visible as possible to drivers by wearing bright and reflective clothing.
  5. Be aware that vehicles may enter or exit driveways or backup in parking lots.

It’s especially important to be aware of these tips if you’re out and about in some of the busier areas of Nashville, including Broadway, 2nd Ave., Midtown, 12 South, Hillsboro Village, downtown, and more. Drivers aren’t always on the lookout for pedestrians, and that makes it even more vital that you protect yourself by following as many safety precautions as possible.

In addition, remember that daylight hours are dwindling in Nashville. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, and that means the sun can begin setting well before 5 p.m. in Middle Tennessee. Try to walk only during daylight hours, and if you must walk after dark, carry a flashlight with you.

At Ponce Law, we know that pedestrians face many risks, and when they’re struck by cars, they can suffer serious, disabling, and even life-threatening injuries. If you or someone you love is injured by a driver while you’re walking, our Nashville pedestrian accident lawyers want to help. Contact us today for a free consultation.

I was on I-40 coming into Nashville and a car ran into the back of me. The accident was serious, and I needed surgery. I did ask an attorney friend of mine whom I should call, and he said call Ponce Law. The folks at Ponce Law were outstanding and got us a large settlement.
