3 Tips for Saving Lives of Nashville Motorcyclists

Whether it’s a dual sport, cruiser, or dirt bike, riders take a risk every time they climb onto their motorcycle. There are a thousand ways to crash a bike even on the best roads on the most beautiful riding day, but it’s when you add other drivers into the equation that the risk skyrockets. Why? Because a lot of Nashville drivers simply don’t know how to safely interact with motorcyclists out on the road, and that lack of knowledge and experience can lead to fatal consequences.

Drivers, here are 3 tips for safely sharing the road with motorcycles:

  • Give space. Be sure to always give motorcyclists plenty of room when behind one on the road, especially on the interstate. Motorcyclists can’t stop as quickly as other vehicles on the road. Giving them plenty of space can help you avoid a crash and potentially save a life.
  • Look twice. One of the most common areas for motorcycle crashes is at intersections. Be sure to look twice before pulling out or changing lanes.
  • Be patient. Most motorcyclists are keenly aware of their surroundings at all times, because they know many drivers aren’t. If a motorcyclist is taking his or her time, be patient. They’re cautious because they want to arrive at their destination safely, not inconvenience you.

  • Wear safety gear. Never get on your motorcycle–even for a short trip–without wearing the appropriate safety gear, especially your helmet. According to data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than half of all traffic accidents occur within 5 miles of home.
  • Stay visible. Black may be cool, but bright colors and reflective clothing can make you more visible to drivers of other vehicles.
  • Never assume. Motorcycle accidents continue to happen, even when motorcyclists should be clearly visible. Don’t assume a driver can see you just because it appears that they should.
