Actos Manufacturers Pay Billions in Damages

Actos is one of the best-known diabetes medications for a reason—it works. For years, doctors prescribed it to treat diabetes because its key ingredient, pioglitazone, decreased the amount of glucose released by the liver. In combination with other treatments, Actos helped diabetes patients better regulate their blood sugar levels. Yet despite how well the medication works, a dangerous side effect is causing many patients to wish they had never taken the drug.

The FDA has linked prolonged use of Actos to an increased risk of bladder cancer and urges any patients who experience the following symptoms to call a medical professional immediately:

  • Blood or red color in urine
  • Urgent need to urinate or pain while urinating
  • Pain in back or lower abdomen

To make matters worse, a jury found that Actos manufacturers knew about the risks for developing bladder cancer and hid those findings from the public in the interest of profits. Because of that egregious and deliberate deception, the manufacturer was ordered to pay $9 billion in punitive damages.

If you or someone you love developed bladder cancer after taking Actos, you may be entitled to significant compensation from the manufacturer. Call our Nashville drug injury attorneys today for a free evaluation of your claim.
