Motorcyclists, Watch for Road Hazards this Spring

MDP_Headshots_MichaelPonce

The weather has been warm in Middle Tennessee lately, and many motorcyclists have brought their bikes out of storage to enjoy the pleasant days. If you’re thinking about heading out on two wheels soon, it’s important to be prepared for potential road dangers.

Spring is notorious for bumpy, chipped, and broken roads, and potholes abound in March. Potholes form when water pools inside small cracks in asphalt. When the water freezes, it expands, which damages the surrounding asphalt. Over time, those freeze cycles can cause potholes.

Most potholes are small enough to not pose serious risks to drivers, but motorcyclists always face risks from potholes. Driving into or through a pothole can cause you to lose control of your bike or even be thrown from it. Worst yet, many drivers swerve or slam on their brakes to avoid potholes, which can also be extremely dangerous.

Another serious danger to watch out for is fallen tree limbs. Springtime is often storm season in Tennessee, and riding after a heavy rainfall or high winds can mean riding in areas with fallen tree limbs. These limbs may be hidden by dirt and leaves, so always be on the lookout for potential obstacles when riding, as they may not be obvious or clearly seen.

The biggest risk factor that riders face during spring and any other season is other drivers. Spring can be particularly dangerous, as fewer motorcyclists are on the road during the winter. That means driver may become complacent and less likely to look out for them.
