Michael D. Ponce & Associates are investigating potential malpractice and products liability lawsuits stemming from the fungal meningitis outbreak which has been tied to steroid (methylprednisolone acetate) injections administered to patients for chronic back pain at Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center, and which was compounded by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Massachusetts.
Both NECC and the healthcare facilities, among others, are potentially liable for the serious injuries and deaths due to the contaminated products. Nashville and Middle Tennessee have suffered the greatest number of fungal meningitis incidents nationwide, with most apparently coming from the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center. Also implicated are the Specialty Surgery Center in Crossville and PCA Pain Care Center in Oak Ridge, according to the Tennessean. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now says the number of meningitis cases in Tennessee has risen to 32, including three resulting in death.
