Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter Weather

With the official start of winter just one week away, it’s time to get your vehicle ready for snow, ice, and sleet. Driving in any inclement weather conditions can increase your chances of being involved in a crash, and ice is one of the biggest contributing factors for weather-related accidents.

Even the grippiest all-weather tires can lose some or all traction when they hit large patches of ice. Because it’s so thin and the same color as the asphalt underneath, black ice is difficult to see. When drivers encounter black ice in winter weather—especially in Middle Tennessee, where roads aren’t always prepped for bad weather—they risk losing control of their vehicles.

To reduce your risks of being involved in an inclement weather-related crash, prepare your vehicle for winter weather by following these tips:

  • Make sure your tires are winter-ready. First, check the tread on your tires and their overall condition. Is the tread worn or is there obvious damage to the sidewalls? If so, replace them immediately. You should also make sure your tires are properly inflated, as tires that are under or over their recommended PSI have less traction.
  • Pack emergency supplies in your vehicle. Winter weather creates the possibility of major traffic jams and delays. In some cases, southern snowstorms have even caused travelers to become stranded in their vehicles for many hours or even overnight. Pack your vehicle with the essentials, including a blanket, change of clothing, water, snacks, and a cell phone charger.

Unfortunately, not all drivers take the proper precautions during winter weather. At Ponce Law, our Nashville auto accident lawyers know that plenty of drivers speed, follow too closely, and drive while distracted—even during inclement weather.

If you or someone you love was hurt in a winter weather crash that was caused by a negligent driver, we want to help. Call us today for a free consultation.
