Taking Care of Business: What About Distracted Driving?

Smartphones make communicating for work much easier than in the past. But some are questioning whether these devices are doing more harm than good in the hands of some workers.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that transportation accidents are the leading cause of accidental death in the workplace. The number of distracted driving accidents reported each year is swelling, and it comes as no surprise that cellphone use while driving is a contributing factor in many work-related motor vehicle accidents.

To help prevent distracted driving accidents in Tennessee, the state passed an ordinance that prohibits motorists from sending or receiving text messages while behind the wheel of moving vehicles. This may not be enough to bring a stop to the behavior, which is why an article released by the Fort Campbell Courier recently pleaded with employers and community leaders to create policies at their workplace that keep drivers from attempting to use cellphones while driving. It’s important to remember that failure to adopt such policies could be considered a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in the event of a distracted driving accident.
