Tennessee Highway Patrol Combats Distracted Driving With Big Rig

November 4, 2013

The Nashville Car Accident Lawyers with Ponce Law explain that distracted driving is becoming one of the leading causes of serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions across the nation. Many states have created laws to combat the problem, but experts tend to agree that the regulations can prove difficult for police to enforce.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has recently implemented a new method of catching distracted drivers in the act. According to an article released by WBIR News, troopers are now using tractor-trailers in to enforce distracted driving laws.

Reports indicate the THP has a tractor-trailer combination on-hand as a service vehicle. A spokesperson for the agency, Sgt. Randall Martin, explained that on recent shifts, one trooper drives the vehicle along the highway while another sits in the passenger seat and observes passing drivers. Martin adds that many motorists fail to recognize the truck’s occupants as law enforcement and continue engaging in dangerous behavior in plain sight of the truck.

Most recently, use of the vehicle allowed troopers to catch and cite two distracted drivers in a single afternoon.

The Nashville Personal Injury Lawyers with Michael D. Ponce & Associates applaud the efforts to eradicate distracted driving from Tennessee’s highways and are hopeful to see other imaginative methods being utilized to enforce laws against the behavior.
