Tips for Keeping Your Kids Safe When Traveling to School

School has been back in session for a few weeks in Middle Tennessee, and while most students, parents, and drivers have adjusted to the new school year, kids still face risks every time they travel to and from school. These tips can help keep your children safe throughout the school year.

If you drive your kids to school:

  • Use a booster seat until your child is at least 8 years old or the seat belt fits them properly without one.
  • Don’t let them sit in the front until they’re at least 12 years old. Front airbags can be dangerous for small children.
  • Ensure they buckle up on every ride, regardless of the distance you’re traveling.

If your kids walk to school:

  • Make sure they cross the street only at crosswalks and that they follow the directions of crossing guards.
  • Make sure they stick to sidewalks when they’re available.
  • Don’t let your children walk to school until they are ready, and never let young children walk to school alone.

If your kids ride the bus to school:

  • Ensure they stand at least six feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive at home or at school.
  • Ensure that they remain seated throughout the bus ride and that they don’t distract the bus driver.
  • Encourage them to let you, a teacher, or another adult know about any dangerous situations occurring on the bus.

At Ponce Law, we hope all Middle Tennessee students have a great 2022-2023 school year. If your child gets injured while traveling to or from school this year, especially by a negligent driver, we want to help you and your family get the compensation you need.
