Tips for Surviving a Snowed-In Highway this Winter

Winter weather can strike suddenly. Even when weather forecasts predict it, they may not accurately predict how intense it will be. And in other cases, drivers have to head out despite urgent pleas from meteorologists and safety officials to stay home.

For some drivers, the threat of driving on slick and icy roads is just one dangerous factor they have to account for. Another potential risk is being trapped in their vehicles for hours or even days if a major snowstorm shuts down the road that they’re on. It has happened several times in recent years, most recently on I-95 in Virginia where drivers were trapped for over 24 hours.

Although your odds of being stuck in traffic that long are low, it’s worth planning for. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Put snacks and water in your vehicle—Find some trunk space for essentials such as bottled water and snacks. These can keep you and your family comfortable while you wait for traffic to clear.
  • Pack blankets—You may need to sleep in your vehicle. If you run low on gas, you won’t be able to use your heater. Blankets can keep you warm overnight.
  • Bring essential medication—If you need to take frequent or daily medication, don’t leave without it—especially if snow is in the forecast. Having the medication that you need can keep you healthy and it could even save your life.
