Caramel Apples Identified as Defective Product Responsible for Multi-State Listeria and Meningitis Outbreak

From design flaws to problems in production, a defective product can take countless shapes and forms. One of the most dangerous faulty items you could encounter is contaminated food.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year, 1 in 6 Americans will become ill after consuming foods that contain bacteria, fungus, or molds.

To bring into perspective just how common exposure to contaminated food is, WKRN 2 News just reported that four people have died and dozens of others across 10 states have been sickened after eating prepackaged, caramel-covered apples that were tainted with listeriosis.

The apples were purchased at convenience stores and resulted in more than 30 individuals developing fevers, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. Many required hospitalization and treatment.

The report went on to explain the Listeria exposure led to a Meningitis outbreak amongst several older children as well.

In order to protect yourself and others from the risk of exposure, you should refrain from eating any prepackaged, caramel-covered apples that are in your possession. Place the items in a plastic, sealable bag and throw them away. If you’ve been sickened after eating a caramel apple, it may have been tainted with Listeria. See your doctor immediately. You may also want to review your legal rights with an attorney.
