Post-Auto Accident Dos and Don’ts

Getting an experienced Nashville auto accident lawyer on your side after a crash is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to protecting your rights to compensation. But there are a few steps you can take—and some you should avoid—before you even call our office that can help maximize your opportunity to get money for your medical bills and lost wages.

After the crash, you should:

  • Get contact information from witnesses and the other driver(s). Being able to contact other people who were involved in the crash or who saw it happen is a vital step in the auto accident claim process.
  • Get medical attention. Even if you don’t think you need immediate medical attention, it’s important to see a doctor or visit a hospital. You may have internal injuries, and your visit will create a medical record of your injuries—which is valuable evidence for your claim.

After the crash, you shouldn’t:

  • Admit fault for the accident. Even if you think you may have partially contributed to the accident, you shouldn’t say that to the other driver, the police, or the insurance company before knowing your rights. Evidence may prove the crash was entirely someone else’s fault, but admitting fault prematurely can jeopardize your claim.
  • Wait too long to contact a lawyer. In addition to the statute of limitations running out, waiting too long to contact an attorney means that evidence can disappear, making it more difficult to prove the other driver was at fault.
