Questions Arise Regarding Insurance Coverage on Ride Sharing Vehicles

March 24, 2014

Ride sharing companies, like Uber and Lyft, have become popular in Nashville recently. However, several serious Car Accident Injuries involving drivers working for these companies have raised questions as to who is liable in the event of a crash. Should the driver or the company be held responsible?

An article from The Tennessean explains both companies have taken action to head off their potential liability for accidents their drivers cause by increasing insurance coverage. Both companies have also adopted policies that provide coverage for their drivers while they are in between giving rides and available to offer rides. Previous rules would have excluded drivers from coverage during this time.

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance are also warning ride share drivers in the state to examine their own insurance policies for exclusions that would cover the insurer if the policyholder is driving for hire.

In the meantime, those who are considering using ride sharing programs are being encouraged to weigh both the pros and cons of using these companies before jumping in a vehicle for a ride.

The Nashville Personal Injury Lawyers with Ponce Law are hopeful the policy changes will help to better protect those who choose to use ride sharing services in the event their driver is involved in a crash.
