What to Watch for When Riding with Your Teen Driver

Teen Driver Safety Week is from Oct. 16-22, and it’s an important week to recognize one of the biggest dangers that teens face. Getting a driver’s license and a vehicle are big milestones in the lives of teens, but they also open young drivers up to significant risks. If you’re the parent of a teen driver, it’s important to work with them not just when they’re studying for their driver’s tests, but also as they continue learning how to be safe drivers.

When riding with your teen, watch for the following risk factors:

  • Speeding: Speeding is extremely common among teens, and it’s not always intentional. Sometimes, they simply don’t realize how fast they’re going. Make sure your teen knows that the speed limit exists for a reason and exceeding it not only puts them at risk for tickets, but also serious crashes.
  • Phone usage: Texting while driving is one of the most common causes of distracted driving, but any phone usage behind the wheel can be dangerous. Changing playlists, checking social media, and taking pictures are all extremely distracting and dangerous while driving.
  • Seat belt usage: Wearing a seat belt dramatically cuts the risk of injury and death in a crash. But too often, teens don’t buckle up. Instilling a habit of always buckling up by doing so yourself can help your teen avoid peer pressure from friends who don’t use their seat belts.
