Check Your Tires During National Tire Safety Week

When was the last time you checked your tires? And not just gave them a quick glance, but a thorough inspection of all four? If you’re like most Tennessee drivers, it was probably a long time ago—if ever!

Along with your brakes, your tires are the most important components on your vehicle. They’re the only part of your vehicle that comes into contact with the ground, and their tread is what keeps your vehicle controllable whether you’re on flat, dry pavement or wet, uneven asphalt.

June 28 to July 4, 2021, is National Tire Safety Week, which makes it the perfect time to inspect your tires. Here are a few things you can do to ensure your tires are in good condition:

  • Check for damage—Before anything else, check your tires for signs of visible damage. Are there any nails or other debris embedded in the rubber? Do the tires appear to have dry rot?
  • Measure their tread levels—Tires have expiration dates, which coincides with when they’ve lost enough tread to no longer grip the road. The easiest way to check your tire tread is to stick a penny in a groove upside down. If you can see Abe’s head, your tires need to be replaced.
  • Check their PSI—One of the quickest ways to improve your vehicle’s safety and performance is to ensure your tires are properly inflated. Check their PSI regularly and inflate any tires that have lost their recommended PSI.

Vehicle maintenance is an essential part of being a safe driver. But not all drivers care about it or giving other drivers the courtesy and respect of following best practices or even traffic laws. When those drivers injure innocent people, our Nashville auto accident lawyers step in to help.
