6 Steps to Take After an Accident

No one plans to be in a serious car accident. It’s not something you place on your calendar or put on your to-do list. It’s an unexpected occurrence that can turn your life upside down. However, you can be prepared for when it happens to you.

Here are 6 steps you should take immediately following an accident:

  1. Look for immediate threats. The accident will happen in a split second, leaving you shaken and disoriented. As soon as you are able, determine whether or not you are in immediate danger of a secondary threat, such as an engine fire.
  2. Assess the damage. If there are no secondary threats, assess the extent of your injuries and those of your passengers.
  3. Call 911. Whether you need medical attention or not, a 911 operator will be able to send out the help you need.
  4. Get medical treatment. Even if you think you’re fine, get checked out by a medical professional. After an accident, your adrenaline will be pumping, which may temporarily mask the impact of your injuries. This is not the time to be tough. Go to the hospital or see your doctor afterward.
  5. Gather evidence. Once an accident scene is cleared, the majority of the evidence is lost. If you are able at the time of the accident, take photos of the scene, get the names of any witnesses, and write down your account of the accident.
  6. Call a lawyer. Dealing with the insurance company after an accident can be time-consuming and frustrating. A lawyer can stand between you and the insurance company to help get you the maximum compensation for your injuries. If you’ve been injured, don’t go it alone. Call an experienced Nashville car accident lawyer immediately.
