Bus Safety Tips for Kids

Thousands of children in Nashville and throughout Middle Tennessee rely on public and private school buses to take them to and from school every weekday. Although buses are one of the safest forms of transportation, they can still pose risks to riders and pedestrians.

Many parents, school administration officials, and even legislators have been more concerned about school bus safety after an accident last fall that killed six children in Hamilton County. Changes that include things like mandatory seat belts on all buses throughout the state have been proposed. However, if passed, that change would take years to enact.

To help your children stay safe on and near their buses, make sure they follow these safety tips:

  • Keep aisles clear. Remind your children to keep bus aisles clear. Always place backpacks, gym bags, instruments, and other items in storage areas or under the seat.
  • Wait for crossing guards to signal when it’s safe to cross the street after exiting the bus. Crossing guards manage traffic at intersections and school zones to help children cross the street safely. Make sure your children know that they should wait for their crossing guard’s signal before entering the road.

Avoiding behaviors that can distract bus drivers is also important, so be sure to remind your children to be respectful on the bus and to stay seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.
