Distracted Driving Causes Fatal Tennessee Car Accident

February 3, 2014

One of the hardest aspects in the investigation of a motor vehicle collision is determining the contributing factors and who should be held responsible for causing the crash. The Nashville Car Accident Lawyers with Ponce Law explain these questions are still being answered in the case of a fatal crash that occurred in Columbia, Tennessee, last week.

Reports from The Daily Herald explain the incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 27, near the crossing of the Nashville Highway and Imperial Road. The 22-year-old driver of a 2000 Mazda Protégé sedan was driving her vehicle north toward Spring Hill when she says her cellphone rang. She said she looked down at the phone and dropped it in the passenger seat moments before she almost plowed into the rear end of the vehicle in front of her.

The driver of the Mazda swerved to avoid the collision, but veered into the oncoming lane of traffic, where she then struck a 2006 Pontiac minivan being driven by a 49-year-old woman. The impact of the collision killed the driver of the van.

Investigators believe distracted driving was to blame, but are also looking into alcohol consumption and a possible defective roadway as factors, considering this was the fourth crash and second fatality at the site within three years.

The attorneys with Michael D. Ponce & Associates know how difficult it can be to lose a loved one to an accident caused by another person’s negligence and the firm would like to send their condolences to the family of the victim.
