How to Safely Handle Aggressive and Angry Drivers

Road rage incidents are all too common, and studies show they may be even more likely to occur during the summer months than at any other time of year. When people are affected by road rage, they no longer act “in their right minds.” Their actions become colored by anger, frustration, and aggression, which can be dangerous, as safe driving requires calm, patience, and focus.

Ensuring that you remain calm and collected behind the wheel, even in the face of heavy traffic, slowdowns, and inconsiderate drivers is only part of the battle. You also need to know how to handle drivers who are already affected by road rage. Tips for handling this situation include:

  • Get away from aggressive and erratic drivers—Change lanes or slow down to allow an angry driver a chance to pass you.
  • Don’t respond to insults or threats—Some road rage incidents involving drivers yelling at others. If this happens, keep your windows rolled up and your eyes on the road ahead.
  • Don’t use your horn—Although using your vehicle’s horn is important in many situations, it can be viewed as an act of aggression by a driver who is already suffering from road rage.
  • Don’t stop—If you believe a driver is following you, keep driving to a safe location, such as a local police station. Stopping anywhere else could put you at risk of a face-to-face confrontation.

There are many risks associated with summer driving, and dealing with angry and unpredictable drivers is unfortunately one of them. If you or a loved one is hurt in a crash this summer, whether it’s caused by a driver who is distracted, intoxicated, or experiencing road rage, we want to help.
